This type of limestone was formed during the Middle Miocene to Late Miocene period (approximately 16 to 7.2 million years ago). The name Laita Limestone comes from the Laita Mountains in Austria. This limestone is known for its rich fossil content, including sharks, rays, manatees, and whales.
